Devolver Digital Direct 2020 Rundown

Did you miss the Devolver Direct this year because you live in a weird time zone or have completely lost control over your life? Me too! Fear not, as I’ve compiled all the trailers and other audio visual goodies here on one simple page for your optical pleasure. Bon Appetit!

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout – Mediatonic

I couldn’t tell what the hell this game actually was about… Cutesy and colorful Fall guys seems to be some childlike take on the battle royale genre. Complete tasks against 59 other players without being eliminated by environment challenges like rotating poles. It may seem casual, but remember a round of jailbreak playing as a prisoner in Counter-Strike is nearly the same thing.

Releasing August 4, Fall Guys is dropping onto both. Playstation 4 and Steam. And is available for pre-purchase on steam here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1097150/Fall_Guys_Ultimate_Knockout/

Disc Room –
Kitty Calis, Jan Willem Nijman, Terri Vellmann and Doseone

The year is 2089, a giant disc is discovered rotating off Jupiter (how many moons does one planet need anyway?)

Featuring a room layout that makes me nostalgic for Crystal Quest on the Game Boy, Disc You play as one brave scientist perilously navigating room after room that doesn’t quite meet Operational Health and Safety standards as they are chock full of razor sharp rotating discs. The gameplay is aracadey and simple – don’t get hit. I like it. I made the comparison to Galaxy Quest because games like Disc Room would be right at home on handheld consoles – except they don’t make those any more – no the Switch does not count. Anyway, I like it.

Disc Room is set to release sometime this year. Check out the demo on steam now at: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1229580/Disc_Room/

Olija – Skeleton Crew Studio

The story of Faraday (like the professor?) shipwrecked on a mysterious island crawling with dudes who want to mess you up, luckily you’re armed with a legendary harpoon. Normally for whaling but this time you can use it to gank bad guys and zoom all around the place.

Personally I’m usually not a fan of this minimal style of pixel art but the Gameplay here looks very fluid and the animations are quite expressive, so who cares what I think? The trailer shows off lots of faced paced combat and movement. Grim atmosphere and freaky faced enemies. Looks like a good mix of solid gameplay and an interesting story. I’m intrigued!

Coming to Switch and PC 2020 with a demo available now – Check the game out on steam here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1297330/Olija/

Carrion – Phobia Game Studio

Carrion has been on my radar for a while when the demo first dropped a year or so ago. You play as a horrible red-tendrilled sharp-tooth abomination  with the simple goal of snacking on all the pathetic scientists in your path. Getting stronger and hungrier as you go along.

While it may seem all sadistic carnage you have to be sneaky as you are still quite vulnerable to a variety of hazards and the area takes a bit of work to navigate properly. Carrion carries a cool concept for a game and I had a blast playing the demo (which you can still try on steam).

With this video comes the release date: July 23!

Coming to Xbox One, Switch and PC, available for pre purchase on steam now: https://store.steampowered.com/app/953490/CARRION/

Blightbound – Ronimo Games

The thing that instantly stuck out to me about Blightbound is that they talk about it like it’s a dungeon crawling ARPG like diablo or something but it looks like it plays as a 2d side scrolling beat ‘em up which makes me want to crud in my pants. This game looks rad as fuck. Just listen to the dude in the trailer he’ll tell ya. I love the 2d art and the dark fantasy setting. Early Access kinda sucks but whatever I’ll deal with it for a game this cool. The Steam page shows co-op options for online, local and LAN – Nice! Blightbound is my kind of game.

Coming to Steam Early Access July 29

Weird West – WolfEye Studios

An ARPG with immersive sim characteristics in a weird west setting, what can I say? Devolver knows how to pick ‘em.

I only just heard about this game so good timing, I honestly wanted to know more about it. From what they show in this video has only gotten me more interested. I could explain it all but the creative director in the video does a much better job, so just go ahead watch it.

Weird West has no set release date but you can check it out on steam here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1097350/Weird_West/

Shadow Warrior 3 – Flying Wild Hog

The third game in this modern iteration of Shadow Warrior series. Which, I’m ashamed to admit it but I’ve never played any Shadow Warrior – yet. Fans of the series will be happy to see the return of Lo Wang as he slices and shoots his way through yet another horde of enemies in bloody high definition style. Plenty of action, one liners and cool movement on display in this new gameplay trailer, including a neat looking grappling hook.

Slated for release next year. Visit the Steam store page for updates: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1036890/Shadow_Warrior_3/

Serious Sam 4 – Croteam

What more do you need to know? It’s Serious Sam. Shoot things, Next Room, Secrets, blow things up, SHOOT THINGS, seriously.

After the weird development path that 3 took (started out as a COD clone). It’s cool that they’re making another one. So far, 4 seems to stick to the tried and true formula. Beloved by many Serious Sam is a series that outlasted a lot of its contemporaries. Way to show ‘em Croteam!

AAAHHHHHHH’ing it’s way to Steam and Stadia sometime August you can pre-purchase Serious Sam 4 on the steam page here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/257420/Serious_Sam_4/

Devolver Expo – Flying Wild Hog

What the… fuck?

Never shy to do things a little differently and call things in the industry the way we all see them. Last but certainly not least is Devolver Expo. A game put together by Wild Hog and self described as a ‘first person marketing simulator’. You might just have to see it for yourself. The Expo is maybe, just maybe, a little joke at the expense of E3 being shitcanned this year. Not like I get invited to expos anyway, but I get to go to this one. Thanks Devolver!

Well, that’s all of ‘em folk. A bountiful crop of beautiful games from Devolver, a game publisher that for sure is never, ever boring. Can’t wait to see what they come up with next!
