Indie News Of The Week – 19 July 2020

Greetings mortals, it’s time to dive into this week’s (and some of last weeks) news. Where we will look at some releases, game jams and Kickstarters of coming games and developers in the indie scene.

Releases

Primal Light

Released on the 9th this 2D action platformer from developer Fat Gem. Primal Light features Krog, a buff blue dude with a big green eye thing. Slash up enemies, traverse platforms, beat the bosses. It’s that good old gameplay is a solid polished looking package.

Made in Godot, the open source engine alternative to Unity, Unreal etc. Godot is the little engine that could, and in my cruddy opinion, need more games that can showcase what it can do in competent hands. Primal Light appears to check that box, so that’s a big plus in my book.

Primal Light sports wonderful pixel art with some wicked animations on some of the bosses, whose far-out designs really make this game pop out to me. The tribal/dark fantasy mashup is a setting I really dig.

If you’re a fan of action games of the old school variety then be sure to give Primal Light a look, lest it slide under the radar and let the didgeridoo soundtrack go unheard.

Golden Light

Golden Light, an “adrenaline FPS horror roguelike” by Mr Pink, hit Steam on the 11th. In this creepy ass game everything is out to kill you, and I do mean everything…

Sporting low fidelity graphics and lots and lots of eyeballs. I get some series LSD: Dream Emulator vibes but with the edge and violence turned up. Lets face it, this game is just plain weird. If that’s your jam (it’s certainly mine), be sure to check it out.

Radical Rabbit Stew

Released 16 July by developer Pug Storm (powerful imagery) Radical Rabbit stew will have you completing puzzles, demolishing bosses and showing those rabbits whose boss.

Something about this game reminds me of Goof Troop for the SNES… The graphics, the islands, split screen gameplay, giving your enemies a good whack! Radical Rabbit Stew looks like a ripping good time.

Freshly dropped like small brown pellets on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows this widespread release is sure to find its audience.

Game Jams

The Retrograde Jam wrapped up taking submissions this week. The 10 day Jam ran from from July 3rd to the 12th. And saw over 30 entries, and is now open for voting. Run by Programancer  (who is currently developing their own classic Castlevania inspired game Simon Quest) the jam called for games that “feel like they were meant to be on store shelves in 1991, but got lost in time somehow and were recently discovered”.

I’ve had a brief look over some of the entries and I can feel the quality stuff that has come out of it, it kind of blows me away. Games with set limitations often bring out the creative side of people. Hopefully I would be able to take a closer look at some of the work in the near future.

The Haunted PS1 Summer of Scream Game Jam kicked off yesterday July 18 and runs all the way to September 1st will include games featuring “low poly models, pixel art, and possibly a pixelation filter if it’s 3d” and are of course in the horror genre.

The theme for this jam was decided by community vote. The winner? Architectural Horror. It is kind of lost on me what exactly that means, but I suppose that was the point. I’m sure some very creative ideas will come out of it. Seeing how there is a month and a half before submissions are due and the indie horror community of late has been making very large strides I’m very excited to see what spooky shit comes out of this jam.

Dread X Collection Vol. 2

Do you remember about 4 paragraphs ago I said something about the large strides in teh indie horror community? This is what I’m talking about. I’m seeing so much on Twitter about this second collaboration of indie horror games the hype is starting to get to me.

The first Dread X Collection was a very cool endeavour, even some of the games were a bit rough, it was a commendable effort by all. This second time around gives more time to the developers to flesh out their ideas and I can already see the improvements. (this game will have its own hub world to explore for tapes to play the individual games instead of just selecting from a menu.

That’s all from me this week Crudlings. Now go forth and give these games some love.
